What is online psychiatric care?

Online psychiatric care, also called telehealth or telepsychiatry, lets you meet with a psychiatric provider by secure video instead of traveling to an office. Most of our appointments take place this way, through a HIPAA-compliant platform.

Virtual visits can include psychiatric evaluations, medication management, supportive counseling and ongoing follow-ups. Many patients receive care fully through telehealth, and your provider will review your needs during the initial evaluation.

Who can use telehealth psychiatry in New Jersey?

Our providers are licensed in New Jersey, so we can care for patients anywhere in the state. Telehealth rules generally depend on where the patient is located during the appointment, so plan to be in New Jersey for each video visit.

In-person visits are available at our Hackensack office when clinically appropriate, and some treatment plans may require occasional in-person visits under New Jersey regulations. Your provider will let you know if that applies to you.

New patient? Here is how to start

If you haven’t been seen yet, book your first appointment through Headway or call (201) 616-1371. We’ll confirm your time and send secure intake forms to complete beforehand.

Your first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. When it is time for your appointment, return to this page and check in with your provider. You can also review our accepted insurance plans or the conditions we treat.

Trouble connecting?

If your video will not connect, try refreshing the page, switching browsers or using another device. If you still cannot join, call (201) 616-1371. In an emergency, call 911 or call or text 988.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to download an app for my video visit?

Video visits open through a secure check-in link on this page, so most people can join from a web browser on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Make sure your browser has permission to use the camera and microphone. If you have trouble connecting, call (201) 616-1371.

Is online psychiatric care as effective as in-person care?

Research suggests telehealth can be an effective way to receive many kinds of mental health care, including evaluations, medication management and counseling, and it removes travel time. Some situations still call for in-person visits, and your provider will tell you if that applies to your plan.

Can medication be prescribed during a virtual visit?

Yes, when clinically appropriate. Prescribing decisions follow a comprehensive evaluation, established medical guidelines and applicable New Jersey regulations. Depending on your treatment plan, occasional in-person visits at our Hackensack office may be required, and your provider will tell you if that applies to you.

What if I’m running late or can’t connect?

Try to check in a few minutes early. If you hit technical trouble, refresh the page or switch to another device or browser. If you still can’t join, call (201) 616-1371 so the office knows. To change or cancel a visit, please give at least 24 hours’ notice.

Can I join a virtual visit from work?

Yes, as long as you’re in New Jersey and in a private space where you can speak openly. A closed office or quiet room works well, and headphones help protect your privacy. If privacy is difficult, let the office know and we can look at other options.
