How can you check your mental health coverage?

Coverage varies from plan to plan, even within the same insurance company. Before your first visit, it helps to call the member services number on your insurance card and ask about your outpatient mental health benefits.

Your insurer can confirm what you will pay for an evaluation and for follow-up visits, which is often the clearest way to avoid surprises.

If telehealth is how you plan to meet, ask specifically about virtual mental health visits, since some plans describe them separately from office visits.

What should you ask your insurance company?

When you call, consider asking:

  • Is outpatient psychiatric care, including medication management, covered?
  • Are telehealth mental health visits covered the same way as office visits?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance for mental health visits?
  • Do I have a deductible, and how much of it has been met?
  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization?

What affects what you pay?

Your cost usually depends on your plan’s copay, coinsurance and deductible, and on how much of that deductible has been met. Plans may also treat an initial evaluation differently from routine follow-up visits.

Your insurance company can give you exact figures for your plan, and our office can answer questions about how your visits are billed.

Is private pay available?

Yes. If you are not using insurance, we welcome private-pay clients. Please contact us or call (201) 616-1371 for current fees.

Some patients choose private pay for simplicity, and others use it while new coverage takes effect. Either way, you can ask about fees before you book, so there are no surprises later.

How do you book using insurance?

You can book online through Headway, where you can share your insurance information as part of scheduling, or call our office. We will confirm your appointment and send secure intake forms.

Most visits take place through secure telehealth anywhere in New Jersey, with in-person visits at our Hackensack office when clinically appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

What if my insurance isn’t listed?

You’re still welcome to reach out. Private pay is available, and our office can share current fees. It may also help to ask your insurance company about out-of-network mental health benefits, since some plans reimburse part of the cost of out-of-network care.

Does insurance cover telehealth psychiatry visits?

Many plans cover telehealth mental health visits, but benefits vary by plan. The clearest way to confirm is to call the number on your insurance card and ask whether virtual psychiatric visits are covered and what your share of the cost will be.

My plan is administered by Optum. Is that accepted?

We accept UnitedHealthcare, Oxford and Oscar plans listed with Optum, as well as Carelon Behavioral Health and Quest Behavioral Health. Because plan details differ, confirm your specific behavioral health benefits with your insurer before your first visit.

Why might my cost differ from someone else’s?

What you pay depends on your specific plan, including your copay, coinsurance and deductible. The type of visit matters too, since an initial evaluation and routine follow-up visits may be billed differently. Your insurance company can explain your exact costs.
