What does adult psychiatric care include?

Adult psychiatric care focuses on evaluating and treating mental health conditions that affect how you think, feel and function. Here it includes a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, medication management when it is helpful, supportive counseling and ongoing follow-up visits.

Care is provided by a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner who takes time to understand your history, your goals and your daily life before recommending a plan.

Which conditions do we treat in adults?

When should an adult see a psychiatric provider?

It may be time to reach out when symptoms last for weeks, keep coming back, or affect your work, relationships, sleep or sense of well-being. Many adults reach out simply because something feels off, and that is a perfectly good reason to start.

It also makes sense if you have tried therapy or lifestyle changes and still struggle, if you are wondering whether medication could help, or if you need closer monitoring of medications you already take.

What if you are only wondering whether something is wrong?

You don’t need a crisis or a specific diagnosis to book an evaluation. Plenty of adults come in with a vague sense that focus, mood, patience or sleep is not what it used to be.

An evaluation can give you language for what you have been experiencing, along with an honest answer about whether treatment is likely to help and which kind might be worth trying first.

How do work, relationships and health fit in?

Mental health rarely sits in isolation. Job pressure, caregiving, finances, grief, physical health, alcohol and other substance use all shape how you feel week to week.

Your evaluation covers these areas, and your plan may include practical strategies alongside counseling or medication. With your written consent, we can coordinate with your primary care provider when a physical health issue may be part of the picture.

How does care fit into adult life?

Work, caregiving and packed schedules make appointments hard to fit in. Most visits take place through a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform, so you can meet from home or work anywhere in New Jersey without a commute. In-person visits are available at our Hackensack office when clinically appropriate.

After an evaluation, appropriate work documentation can be provided when clinically indicated. With your written consent, we can also coordinate with your therapist or primary care provider.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Keeping regular follow-ups, even short ones, is usually what keeps a plan working over a busy year.

What about adult ADHD, anxiety and depression?

Adults often live with symptoms for years before seeking help. Some are evaluated for ADHD for the first time in adulthood, after noticing long-standing trouble with focus, time and organization. Others realize that anxiety or depression has slowly reshaped daily life.

Whatever brings you in, treatment is personalized. Your plan may combine lifestyle strategies, counseling and, when appropriate, medication, with regular follow-ups so it can be adjusted as you go.

If you are in crisis

We are not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a medical or psychiatric emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For 24/7 support in the U.S., call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to get help as an adult?

No. People seek mental health care for the first time at every stage of adult life, sometimes after years of coping on their own. An evaluation looks at where you are now and what you want to change, and treatment is built around that rather than how long symptoms have been present.

Can I schedule visits around my work day?

Most visits are virtual, so you can meet from home, work or another private space in New Jersey without travel time. When you book through Headway you can choose from the times available. If nothing fits, call (201) 616-1371 and we’ll try to accommodate you.

What if I’ve had a bad experience with mental health care before?

That’s worth saying out loud at your first visit. Let your provider know what didn’t work, whether it was a medication, a communication style or feeling rushed. Your evaluation gives room to review that history, and your plan is built around your goals and preferences.

What should adults bring to a first visit?

It helps to have a list of current medications and doses, any past diagnoses or treatment records, your insurance information, and notes about your main concerns. You’ll also receive secure intake forms after booking. If you don’t have past records, you can still get started.

Can adults be treated for more than one condition?

Yes. It’s common for adults to have more than one concern, such as anxiety with depression, or ADHD with sleep problems. Your provider looks at how symptoms overlap and builds one coordinated plan instead of treating each concern in isolation.
